The working class is multi-racial and trade unions play a pivotal role in making workplaces and workforces anti-racist.
These resources highlight the anti-racist work being done by trade unions to create a more just workplace.
The Fire Brigades Union
Black and Ethnic Minority Members
The Black and Ethnic Minority Members (B&EMM) section is a progressive group within the Fire Brigades Union.
It represents, supports and spearheads the equalities agenda for under-represented ethnic minority members within their union and the modern Fire & Rescue Service, whilst simultaneously championing equality principles in the wider communities we serve.
The section seeks to be a focal point for advice and support on dealing with issues of discrimination, harassment and debarment as they affect B&EMMs of the fire and rescue service.
NASUWT The Teachers’ Union
NASUWT, the Teachers’ Union, provides unrivalled protection, benefits and support for teachers.
In light of evidence received by the NASUWT, the Union has written to the Secretary of State and Ministers in devolved nations about the growing race-related abuse and harassment targeted at BME pupils and staff around the coronavirus outbreak.
The NASUWT is building a campaign to challenge all forms of race discrimination, injustice and inequality in education.
The Act For Racial Justice Campaign was launched at the NASUWT’s annual BME Consultation Conference, which is now the biggest event for BME teachers in Europe.
The campaign has been launched partly as a response to findings by the Union showing that BME teachers are saying they believe they are being discriminated when it comes to pay progression, access to CPD, and promotion prospects and increasingly being subject to capability procedures.
It also aims to address issues around the inequality in educational provision for BME pupils, unequal academic attainment among different minority groups and the wider problem of racism in society.

This Facebook Live panel on the topic of racism features internal and external speakers, and was made jointly with Show Racism the Red Card.

The CWU has continued its work on the development of a long-term strategy and high- profile campaign against all forms of racism. The union has a strong reputation for its anti- racist campaigning over many years.
“We are launching ‘CWU Against Racism’ - an overarching branding which we will use to promote our anti-racism campaigning, educational work and membership engagement.
In the coming weeks and months, we will set out our plans in greater detail and engage the whole union in delivering the strongest strategy possible. We are also in a position to announce a series of events and resources in the short term which will increase the profile of the CWU in our anti-racism work, inlcuding Facebook Live panels and partnering with Show Racism The Red Card.
Facing down and calling out racism is a key part of delivering the type of society we all want. The CWU will, as always, play our full part in that.”
